Milton Charles Hallberg, An Educational Giant - RIP

Milton and his wife of 57 years, Polly
Milton Charles Hallberg, age 76, died on November 15, 2012. He was born on April 14, 1936 in Monmouth, IL.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline (Boyer) Hallberg of State College, PA.

Also surviving are his son, Brian Hallberg, grandson, Brandon Hallberg, and granddaughter, Gretchen Hallberg all of Port Matilda, PA; sisters: Vivian George of Goshen, IN, Ruth Baylor of Bettendorf, IA, and Jeanette Hallberg of Moline, IL; and a brother, Leon Hallberg of Bettendorf, IA. He was preceded in death by his father, John Harold Hallberg; his mother, Hilma Otelia (Swanson) Hallberg; a sister, Joyce Johnson of Monmouth, IL; a sister Shirley Cleland of San Diego, CA; and daughter-in-law Nancy (Welsh) Hallberg of Port Matilda, PA.

Milton Hallberg received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. degree from Iowa State University. He accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Agricultural Economics at Penn State University in 1965 and retired from that Department in 1998 as Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics.

While at Penn State, he taught courses in quantitative methods for agricultural economists and courses in the general area of agricultural policy.

His research efforts were also in these general areas. During his tenure at Penn State he advised 18 Masters Degree candidates and 17 Ph.D. degree candidates.

He also served as interim Head of the Department on two separate occasions. Recognition of Milton Hallberg's contributions to the Agricultural Economics discipline led to invitations to serve as a visiting scholar at other institutions in the United States and elsewhere. In 1972-73, he served as visiting Economist with the Economic Research Service of USDA in Washington D.C. In 1976, he served as Visiting Professor of Agricultural Economics at Oklahoma State University. In 1984 and again in 1995 he served as Thurburn Visiting Fellow at the University of Sydney in Australia. In 1984 he also served as Visiting Research Professor at The Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Germany. In 1990 he served as Visiting Professor of Agricultural Economics at Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He has also lectured at Universities and research institutes in Santurce, Puerto Rico; Seoul, Korea; Uppsala and Stockholm, Sweden; Ås, Norway; Castelar, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Montevideo, Uruguay; and Warsaw, Poland.

He was always most pleased that his wife, Polly, could accompany him on all of these visits, except to South America, organizing social discussions with various local groups and planning a variety of professional and sightseeing trips.

Prior to beginning his college career, Milton Hallberg was employed as a depot agent for the CB&Q railroad in Illinois which led him to a somewhat unique interest in his retirement years – creating a database of all railroads ever chartered in the U.S. and Canada – which he made available free to all interested railroad fans via the Internet.

He was also an avid golfer, and an avid reader. He enjoyed organizing and updating his family tree which at the time of his death contained over 1,000 entries and traced some of his Swedish heritage back to 1709. He enjoyed putting together reference pamphlets on various subjects related to his post-retirement reading and/or research – e.g., a picture book of European cathedrals he and Polly visited, a summary of the characteristics of major religions, etc.

He particularly enjoyed listening to and learning about classical music.

He loved his family and was always elevated in spirit when his grandchildren came to visit.

In addition to his other interests during retirement, he was actively involved in studying U.S. agricultural history. To facilitate this study, he constructed a long-term database of the U.S. agricultural sector over the last two centuries and in cooperation with his grandson, wrote a rather extensive historical timeline of various U.S. events since the early 1700s.

Visitation will be 6-8 pm on Thursday, November 29, 2012, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton Street, State College.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 30, 2012, at 11 am at the funeral home.

A private burial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Centre Volunteers in Medicine, 2520 Green Tech Drive, Suite D, State College, PA 16803, or Penn State THON, 210 Hetzel Union Building, University Park, PA 16802.

Seth Edwards gets a middle name!

Here's some more details (and a link to the Edwards blog) of Seth's arrival.

Seth Titus Edwards

Seth has entered our world in person. At 05:30 or thereabouts on Sunday morning (Father's Day), Rebecca's bag of waters broke. We arrived at the hospital around 6am. Seth was born at 07:18 July 21, 2009; 7lbs. 10oz.; 21 1/2" long; blonde hair; blue eyes.

Dr. Ferguson arrived on the run in time to clamp and cut the cord that was wrapped twice around Seth's neck... and catch. Seth was a bit dusky and needed oxygen, but revived well and has done outstanding. At his 4 day check up, he had already gained back his birth weight plus 3 oz. He is a delight to all--easy going and loves to hear his siblings around him. (They also enjoy him greatly!)

Here are Seth's siblings.

Nathanael on the top bunk and Thaddeus on the bottom bunk.

And big sister Hannah

Pretty neat bunch.

Welcome to Seth Edwards - 21 Jun 2009

Seth Edwards was born @ 0718 on 21 Jun 2009. He weighed in at 7 pounds 10 ounces and was 21 1/2" long. Both he and Rebecca (the mother) are doing GREAT. Seth was 2 days over due so when he did decide to make his appearance.

The labor was relatively short. They left the house at about 0530 and Seth arrived about two hours later. The doctor almost didn't make it there in time.

Here are a few photos of the 1st day.

Mom is doing very well and feels pretty good. She looks great too.

Grandmama was very pleased and thankful that everything went well and quickly. I think I heard "Praise God" more than a few times.

Hanna was pretty excited.

Nathanael was very VERY careful and watchful of his newest brother. He was great with Seth.

Thaddeus was also pretty excited but will probably take a while to really realize what it all means.

Next is Seth being attended to by his brothers and sister and Grandmama.

Here's Seth with the new booties made by Hannah. Great job Hannah.

And Ryan letting Thaddeus hold his new brother. He did a good job too.

Last is the video.

Norah's & Levi's 1st beach experience

Why won't they stop?

I'm going to get you, STOP. I wana play with you.

OKAY, they won't play so I'm hitting the water.

Come on Mama, let's get in the water.

Norah, those are waves. It's OK.

You're done, No? I'm done. Let's go...

Hey, I see Levi and Grandmama. Let's wave to them. And go see how Levi's doing. Come on, I'll race you...

Oh, you need something for show and tell... OK, let's go...

Hey, what happened? You fall down? Too tired? No?
Oh, you're making Sand Angeles. Neat.

But it's better if you lay on your back instead. :)

Hi Levi, how ya doin'? You look like you're enjoying your first day at the beach too.

That was a real kick-in-the-pants day. I wana do it again.

Clocks, clocks and old furniture

From our most recent adventure to Ft. Wayne to our 1st purchases of furniture from Lon at Home Again.

This is a clock we purchased at the Fort Wayne, IN auction of Dr. David L. Tennant antique collections of clocks, watches and furniture. It was a very good event.

This clock is the Birge & Peck 8 day Half Column triple decker "Puffin Betsy" clock we bought for Jeanette, Viv's sister in Moline, IL. We hope to be delivering it and the next clock soon.

Here's an unusual clock (for me at least) in that it only strikes once - at 1 o'clock. Hence the name "Dickory, Dickory, Dock" clock. Jeanette will be very excited to get both of these clocks to add to her already vast and impressive clock collection.

Following are the clocks that we bought at the same auction. 1st on is a Seth Thomas in pretty good shape.

Then our new Sessions Clock
Here's a Japanese "Regulator" type wall clock. Keeps excellent time and is in pretty good shape.

This is Viv's birthday present for me last April. It's a Kundo Anniversary clock and it's in good shape and keeps good time as well.

Here are our recent furniture purchases. A love seat from Nappanee and a neat little antique table from the Ft. Wayne auction.

And Viv seated at her corner desk that we purchased at Home Again shortly after we moved to Goshen, IN in Jan 07.

This is Love Seat we SHOULD have bought at this Fort Wayne auction but didn't. It went for only $250.00. It was really very nice. Should have gotten it darn it.

This Grandfather's Clock was >$10,000 when the doctor purchased it and brought only $3200 at the Ft. Wayne auction. It was BEAUTIFUL!

Some pictures of the "action" at the Fort Wayne auction in July 07. It was a very well run auction and a lot of fun.

And the following pictures are of my Newly Reconfigured Clock Repair Tool Kit.
I got the wooden tool box at a Shipsheewana auction full of fishing lures. It was a STEAL at only $40. There was over $50 worth of fishing lures in it! I have since converted it to work on clocks.

This is one of two pocket watches that Viv had to have that she had to pay $15 each for at the Ft. Wayne auction. They're interesting but - well - they're interesting.

These are some chairs that we purchased from Lon at Home Again sometime in March or April 2007. We had "fun" stripping years of neglect, black stuff and spider webs off and re-gluing them, then refinishing and re-upholstering them with Viv's theme of BUTTERFLIES. But we think it was worth it.
